#174 and #175 - Rockport and Gloucester (Cape Ann)

For towns #174 and #175 we went to Cape Ann. While this Cape is not as large or well known as Cape Cod, it is quite close to Boston and has tons of scenic ocean views. In Rockport (#174) we explored Rockport Harbor, in the quaint seaside town of Rockport. The famous Roy Moore red lobster shack is the focal point of this area, and the subject of many paintings and photographs. It is popularly known as “Motif Number 1”. Rockport was a major supplier of high quality granite and, of course, seafood 🐟 🦞
Then we went to Gloucester (#175). Sailing from, perhaps, the most important fishing port in the history of our country, the Gloucester fishermen harnessed the bounty of the George’s Bank, off Nova Scotia. The inscription on the Fisherman’s Memorial statue says “They That Go Down to the Sea In Ships”. Over 5,300 Gloucester fishermen were lost at sea, from 1623 to present day. A series of plaques, fronting this statue, lists all their names. This is unique to Gloucester and is quite moving. Next to it is the "Cut Bridge" (made famous on instagram), which is a fun spot to watch boats go through a small channel to the harbor.
